This is a very rare vintage couture dress from the 40's to 1950's. Not only for it's quality but for it's size too. This is bigger than most vintage dresses of that time. This dress fits a nicer more modern size figure. It's way too big for our mannequin in the photos.
It has a bit of art deco glamour to it, we think, but a classically styled black evening dress for sure. We think this dress is a Sophie Gimbal design it was made during her time there as head designer. There is no Sophie label in it only SAKS. She was the most expensive designer of her time when she started at Saks in the 1920's. This is an original custom dress made only for Saks Fifth Avenue which was extremely expensive back in it's day...one of a kind. It's amazing the wonderful condition it's still in. This gorgeous black evening designer dress is made of 2 layers of silk...the under layer is hand finished silk and the outer layer is a silk crepe or possibly a very fine rayon crepe. It's embroidered with long silky fringe all around the hips and to the floor. There's a black metal zipper in back. It's a simple and elegant style that will never go out of fashion. Timeless! They used to wear a big piece of Eisenberg ice in the center where the dress gathers...that was the style back then... the bigger the ice the better!
